All we really know is that the road ahead will be a long one. Dottie will not be able to absorb nutrients the way our bodies were designed to and so she will need something called TPN, Total Parenteral Nutrition. This means a picc line (peripherally inserted central catheter) will be inserted into a major vein. The picc line will provide all of the nutrition that Dottie needs to survive. She does have a feeding tube in place and will be able to receive extremely small amounts of breast milk directly into her stomach. This small amount of food will only have a very short route through the small intestines and won't be providing any real source nutrition.
We don't know how long Dottie will be in the hospital or when we might be able to take her home. TPN is a very time consuming way to receive nutrition and we have a lot to learn about taking care of her before even thinking of bringing her home.
Thank you for your prayers and please continue to lift up Dottie Lou. We know God loves her even more than we do and we are grateful for each day we have with her.
